Counseling Corner: Willowbrook Guidance Department offers summer programs and summer school

Summer break is right around the corner, and it’s time to start thinking about the educational opportunities available during the summer at Willowbrook.

Below is information about Willowbrook summer programs and classes to help get ahead or catch up on credits.

  • Summer educational programs and camps directory: You can find information about the summer education programs and camps directory at www.studenteducationprograms.com. That website provides information about precollege programs, enrichment programs, academic camps, internship programs and much more. Participating in those programs has many benefits, including an opportunity to learn about a topic of interest at an in-depth level, preparing for the transition from high school to college, exploring career fields of interest, etc. Many summer educational programs and camps take place on college campuses, which enables high school students to gain experience in a college environment.
  • Credit recovery: For students who need to recover a credit/class that is required for graduation, Willowbrook offers online self-paced classes. Classes will start on June 16, and there will be two sessions – 8 to 11:20 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Transportation will be provided for Session I only. The cost is $100 a class, and registration forms will be available in the Guidance Office in May. Space is limited for each session, and priority is given to upperclassmen.
  • Classroom courses: Students also can sign up for classes in speech, consumer education, economics, driver's education and accelerated geometry. Those classes will run from 8 to 11:20 a.m. June 16 through July 18. The cost is $160. The driver's education class will have an additional fee for Behind the Wheel. Registration forms are available in the Guidance Office and are due by April 16.
  • College of DuPage high school courses: These courses can be used to recover credits, move ahead in requirements or for enrichment. A variety of courses are available at different costs. Go to www.cod.edu/youth for a list of courses and information on how to register.
