Addison Trail hosts Goalball tournament for students with visual impairments

On Oct. 29, about 45 students with visual impairments participated in the 11th Goalball tournament.

The tournament took place at Addison Trail and allowed those students the opportunity to play a sport where their visual impairment did not play a factor in their performance ability. Goalball involves rolling a ball across a court in hopes of scoring a goal against another team. Accommodations are made to allow the students to play. Teams that participated in this year's tournament were Illinois School for the Visually Impaired (ISVI), Wisconsin School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (WSBVI), South East Association for Special Parks And Recreation (SEASPAR) and Addison Trail's SASED vision program students.

“I like to be able to compete in the sport against the other athletes,” said Aziz Zeidieh, a sophomore at Addison Trail in the SASED vision program.

Wendy Brusich, Addison Trail SASED vision program teacher, said she loves the opportunity for her students to participate in Goalball.

“As a coach, it is wonderful to see the students improve in their skills throughout the season,” she said. “It helps build their self-esteem.”
