Counseling Corner: Willowbrook Guidance Department shares important information regarding course selection for the 2022-23 school year

The Willowbrook Counseling Department has started the course selection process for the 2022-23 school year.

To assist students and parents/guardians with that process, the following events have been provided.

  • Throughout the month of January, freshmen, sophomores and juniors were shown videos from the art, CTE and music departments. Those videos showcased the available course offerings in those elective areas.

  • All students were sent the Curriculum Showcase website (https://sites.google.com/dupage88.org/wbhscurriculumshowcase), where they are able to view videos and presentations from all academic departments to learn about the vast course offerings at Willowbrook, as well as academic and social-emotional supports.

  • On Jan. 7, 21 and 28, School Counselors visited students during resource period to help with the course selection process. Pupils were provided with their official transcript, a course selection sheet and a four-year-plan worksheet. Students watched a video that detailed how to select courses in PowerSchool to prepare for their meeting with their School Counselor. All course selection materials were e-mailed to students and parents/guardians.

  • Juniors met individually with their School Counselor from Jan. 10 to 13 for a junior interview and a course selection meeting. Sophomores met individually with their School Counselor from Jan. 24 to 28 to select courses for their junior year. Freshmen will meet individually with their School Counselor from Jan. 31 to Feb. 4 for a freshman interview and a course selection meeting. During those meetings to select courses, counselors review teacher recommendations, the student’s college/career plans and the student’s interests/motivations. The Counseling Department met with members of the class of 2026 to select courses on Jan. 22, 27 and 29.

Course selection is a vital part of a student’s high school career, and parental involvement is essential to assist students in making successful academic choices. To view the Course Listing Guide, go to https://www.dupage88.net/site/public/files/?item=6167.

Below are important reminders regarding the course selection process:

  • Students should consider their future college/career choices when selecting courses.
  • Students need to be enrolled in at least six periods, plus a lunch.
  • Schedules are computer generated, so counselors are unable to confirm a specific schedule.
  • A parent/guardian must review course selections in PowerSchool.
  • Support classes are beneficial for students who need academic support during the day or for students involved in extracurricular activities who need study or academic support time during the school day.
  • Students are encouraged to speak with their teachers in subjects of interest about future courses.
  • Naviance is a great tool to assist with the college/career process and to examine course sequence, which can assist students during course selection.
  • Course selections will be considered final after Feb. 18.

  • This is a semimonthly column that features news from the Guidance Department. The column will alternate between Addison Trail and Willowbrook.
