Willowbrook alumnus continues to raise funds for Relay For Life to support those living with cancer

When Willowbrook alumnus Tadeusz “Tad” Tchop (class of 2021) was a freshman, he learned the school hosts an annual Relay For Life of District 88 Youth and immediately got involved to support the event.

During his four years at Willowbrook, Tchop has raised $8,301.11 to benefit the American Cancer Society through selling pies, cookies, bracelets and raffle baskets, as well as receiving donations from family members and friends.

“Some of my family members have had cancer, and I wanted to raise money to help others who are dealing with that,” Tchop said.

Tchop added that fundraising was difficult this past year. Not only was there the challenge of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, but Tchop also was hospitalized for nearly two weeks as a result of pancreatitis. But he didn’t let those hardships slow him down. While in the hospital, Tchop saw children who had cancer, and he was motivated to continue making a positive difference.

“I’m proud to help people living with cancer get the help and support they need,” Tchop said.

In the fall, Tchop will attend the District 88 Transition Program (which helps individuals ages 18 to 21 who have disabilities learn life skills, obtain job training in a community setting and transition to life after District 88), which means he will be able to keep working with the district’s Relay For Life efforts.

“I encourage all District 88 students to get out and participate in Relay For Life – it’s a great organization and event,” Tchop said.
