On May 20, Addison Trail dedicated a plaque provided by the school’s Wrestling Team in honor of the late District 88 Superintendent Dr. Scott Helton, who passed away on Dec. 10, 2020. Dr. Helton had more than 33 years of experience in education and served in a variety of capacities, including as Principal of Addison Trail for 11 years and as Superintendent of District 88 since 2012. He was incredibly ingrained in the District 88 community and helped build positive futures for countless students through his contributions to public education.

Dr. Helton coached several sports, but wrestling was his true passion. He was a professional wrestler during his college years and a few years of his teaching/coaching career. All three of his sons (Scott Jr., Joe and Tommy) also competed in wrestling at a high level.

As a tribute to Dr. Helton’s positive impact on the sport, Addison Trail will display the plaque – which reads “In memory of Dr. Scott Helton, In recognition of his invaluable support and contributions to the Addison Trail High School Wrestling Program” – in its Wrestling Gym. Addison Trail Principal Michael Bolden, Athletic Director Matt Thompson and the Wrestling Team coaches presented the plaque to Dr. Helton’s sons and their mother, Annie Rice, during the May 20 wrestling meet between Addison Trail and Morton, where Dr. Helton’s son Joe is the head coach and a special education teacher. His son Tommy also will follow in his footsteps of teaching and coaching when he joins the Morton staff this fall.
