District 88 Board of Education approves Internet Essentials Agreement with Comcast to provide low-income students with internet service

The DuPage County Board, in partnership with the DuPage Regional Office of Education (ROE), recently approved a $1.5 million commitment to provide low-income students with internet service through the Internet Essentials Partnership Program.

During its Sept. 14 meeting, the District 88 Board of Education approved the administration’s recommendation to complete the Internet Essentials Agreement with Comcast for a 12-month term. Comcast is one of the key vendors and is providing the terms of agreement for a school district to enroll.

A promo code is required to get free internet service through this program, and eligible families will receive information from Addison Trail or Willowbrook with details to apply.

What is the Internet Essentials Partnership Program?
Through this program, school districts find appropriate vendors to provide internet service at no cost to low-income students.

Who is eligible to participate in the program?
Households may be eligible for Internet Essentials if they:

  • Qualify for the National School Lunch Program, housing assistance, Medicaid, SNAP, SSI and other programs

  • Live in an area where Comcast Internet Service is available

  • Have not had Comcast Internet in the last 90 days

  • Families who owe money to Comcast may still qualify if approved by Dec. 31, 2020

How is the program funded?
District 88 will pay for the service. All or some of the costs will be reimbursed by the ROE. Funding will be provided from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
