On Oct. 12, Addison Trail hosted the school’s sixth annual Kermes (Latino food festival).

More than 400 people attended the event (the largest turnout to date), which featured traditional Latino dishes, live entertainment, raffles and family-friendly activities. Highlights included performances by the Mexican Folkloric Dance Group “Tonantzin” (which is comprised of mothers of Addison Trail students, and the group rehearsed for nearly a year), a youth dance group, a mariachi band and Addison Trail’s Energy Rush. The event was coordinated by Addison Trail Interact Club sponsors Jorge de Leon and Claire Sychta, members of Interact Club and Padres Latinos en Acción, District 88 Administrative Assistant for Special Education/Student Services Esther Delgado and Addison Trail English/Social Studies Department Secretary Laura Grunschel.

The Kermes was part of Addison Trail’s National Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. National Hispanic Heritage Month takes place each year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, and the school hosted a variety of activities and fundraisers in recognition of the event and to benefit scholarships for graduating Addison Trail seniors.
