Willowbrook teacher receives Symetra Heroes in the Classroom award

Sometimes being a hero doesn’t mean wearing a costume or having a special power.

Sometimes it means just making a difference in the lives of those around you.

And Willowbrook social worker Erik Engel was recently recognized for being just that kind of hero. On Nov. 12, Engel received the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom award, which is a community program that recognizes 16 Chicago-area teachers during the Bears season for outstanding leadership and instructional skills. The award is presented by Arthur J. Gallagher, and the winners are selected from hundreds of nominees.

“It’s humbling,” Engel said of receiving the award. “I don’t do this for accolades or attention, so I’m humbled to be recognized.”

Engel was nominated by Willowbrook Assistant Principal Ann Kimpton, who said Engel’s passion and commitment to the various student demographics at Willowbrook truly make him a hero in the classroom and beyond. A few examples of Engel’s dedication to Willowbrook include organizing a community potluck event; directing “High School Musical Jr.,” which was performed by Willowbrook and Addison Trail special needs students who were accompanied by their fellow classmates; and sponsoring the Willowbrook INTERACT Club and the Innovative Young Achieving Mens Group (I.Y.A.M.).

“This award is an opportunity to honor someone who does things really quietly in the building, but who makes a difference in the lives of students and never asks for anything else,” Kimpton said. “(Engel) truly goes above and beyond to provide opportunities for all students.”

As a Symetra Heroes in the Classroom award recipient, Engel received:

  • A $1,000 donation to Willowbrook
  • Two tickets to the Nov. 17 Bears home game against the Baltimore Ravens, along with a parking pass
  • VIP sideline access during the game
  • Recognition on the video board during the game
  • A custom Bears jersey

Willowbrook teacher Andy Isaacson won the award in 2011, and Engel said he is proud to carry on the tradition.
