Each year on Nov. 11, we recognize Veterans Day, which provides an opportunity to pause and reflect to honor and thank those who have served/plan to serve in the U.S. military.

Veterans Day honors the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918 that signaled the end of World War I, known as Armistice Day. At District 88, our schools remain open on this day to help ensure students learn about the significance of this event.

This year, Addison Trail invited members of the Addison Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7446 and other veterans, as well as the Addison Police Department and the Addison Fire Protection District, to the school’s annual luncheon (which took place on Nov. 4). Participants watched a video and saw a display that featured photos and items of veterans from Addison. The school also recognized current students who plan to serve in the military and decorated a tree with red, white and blue lights. See a photo gallery above.

At Willowbrook, American flags lined the entryway to the school on Nov. 11. Willowbrook staff members and students who have served/plan to serve were featured during a special segment of The Brooks Channel, Willowbrook’s student-run news station, which aired on Nov. 11. Those staff members also read announcements at the beginning of each period to share information about the branches of the military and the history of Veterans Day. The Willowbrook Concert Choir also performed during a Veterans Day Ceremony hosted by the Village of Villa Park, the City of Oakbrook Terrace and the Villa Park Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2801. Thank you to those who have served/plan to serve for protecting our country and freedoms. We truly appreciate your commitment, bravery and sacrifice.

With District 88 Pride,
Jean Barbanente, Ed.D.
