Math Resource Center

The Math Resource Center is designed to provide support for freshmen who are enrolled in Algebra. Students are assigned to the Math Resource Center based on scores from placement tests or upon recommendation from their teachers. The Math Resource Center is open all periods during the regular school day.

Academic Resource Center (ARC)

The Academic Resource Center (ARC) provides tutoring in a variety of subject areas before, during and after the school day. Its primary goal is to develop students who:

• Are in control of their own learning.
• Set learning goals.
• Know how to use a variety of strategies to meet those goals.
• Can revise their plans to reach their goals effectively.
• The ARC staff is committed to empowering students with the tools for creating their own academic success.

ARC HOURS

The ARC is open from 7:00 a.m. until 4:15 p.m. – one hour and 15 minutes after the last class and in time for the 4:30 p.m. late bus. Students seeking academic assistance may either be assigned to the ARC in place of a regular study hall or visit on an as-needed basis. Drop-in visits are allowed only during lunch periods 4-7 or before/after school. Additionally, Internet-connected computers are available for assistance with academic projects or skill development in reading comprehension, vocabulary or test prep.

PLACEMENT

Placement in the ARC is based on referrals from teachers, guidance staff, parents or students themselves. While the ARC is open to the entire student body, a priority is given to students who demonstrate need for additional academic support.

CENTER AMENITIES

Each period is supervised by a certified teacher and supported by content-area teachers and aides who are available for research-based instruction in a variety of subject areas. Staff will provide:

• Need-based strategy and skill development in reading, writing, mathematics, science reasoning, goal setting, organization and general study skills. Building student independence and student ownership of learning strategies is the focus of the ARC.
• Test prep instruction for college entrance and state-mandated exams.
• Communication with parents, content-area teachers and guidance staff.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

Students who participate positively and actively in their education will benefit directly; therefore, students are expected to:

• Be engaged in academic pursuits from bell to bell.
• Work cooperatively and respectfully with ARC staff and other students.
• Be seated when the bell rings with the necessary books and supplies.

Students will be reassigned to a regular study hall if they:

• Are disruptive or disrespectful.
• Do not regularly use ARC assistance.
• Demonstrate academic competence through supporting standardized test scores and grades.
