Dyrds Web Page Standards (developed 8/6/98)

DuPage High School District 88 Web Page Standards

The purpose of the DuPage High School District 88 Website is to enhance instruction and provide the community with information about the District and its schools, Addison Trail High School, and Willowbrook High School. All pages should support this purpose.

Initial requirements for school web pages

The principal designates a "Webmaster" to be responsible for the pages. (Note: For 1998-1999 the Webmasters are John Yakel-ATHS and Karen Jandak-WBHS).
A web page submission form is completed by the staff member. (Note: Final decisions regarding building-level web page content rest with the building principal or his designee.)

Required content for school pages

School name appears at the top of every school page.
All pages have a clearly defined navigation bar, which includes links to the main pages in the school web, school home page, and the District home page.
Revision date, URL, and "Webmaster" appear on every page.
Page contains up-to-date time sensitive information (calendars, special event descriptions, etc.). Any out-of-date information will be removed by the Webmaster.
Page contains no text, image or sound that is profane, obscene or degrading to others.
School pages hung on outside servers follow the same standards as local school pages.

Restrictions for school pages

Use of student names is not allowed. Student work may not be identified by name. Also personal information about students is not allowed. This includes street or e-mail addresses and home phone numbers.
Use of student pictures (group or individual) without names is allowed only if parents have signed a release form and understand what publication on the Web means. (Release forms will be distributed at registration. A sample is attached.)
Before any student work is published, a release form is signed by the student’s parent or guardian.
Links to non-DuPage High School District 88 pages should be related to a well defined educational purpose. The Webmaster will check this site on a regular basis to make sure information is appropriate and available.
Links to personal pages (staff or student) are not allowed.
Links back to school pages must be approved by Webmaster and Principal.
Copyrighted materials are not to be published without obtaining prior permission from the author.

Legal requirements for school pages

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the reproduction, distribution, adaptation, public performance, and public display of copyrighted material.

Under certain conditions specified in law, nonprofit libraries are authorized to lend, lease, or rent copies of computer programs to patrons on a nonprofit basis and for nonprofit purposes. Any person who makes an unauthorized copy or adaptation of the computer program, or redistributes the loan copy, or publicly performs or displays the computer program, except as permitted by Title 17 of the United States Code, may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to fulfill a loan request if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the request would lead to violation of the copyright law.

Technical requirements for school pages

Standard HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is to be used. Pages using HTML standard extensions and other enhancements must display legibly and meaningfully in Netscape Navigator and/or Microsoft Internet Explorer and run in Microsoft FrontPage.
Each page must have a title tag with a unique title that describes the page.
Links to non-HTML files (graphics, pdf files, etc.) must be labeled as such, include the file’s size, and information needed to work with any browser. Links will not require the loading or downloading of additional software to run the non-HTML file.
Pages may not include sound, flashing or animated text, or graphics.
All page files (text and graphics) need to be in a common folder.
