The design of the
mentoring program in District 88 is for experienced teachers to
work with newly hired staff members as part of a continuous
staff development process, including participation in the
district's various staff development offerings. Experienced
staff that have mastered their craft and are dedicated to
promoting excellence and quality in the teaching profession will
be sought as mentors for staff new to the district. District 88
offers all newly hired teachers the opportunity to participate
in a two-year program of mentoring, induction, and professional
growth. Participation in the first year of the program will be
mandatory for all teachers new to District 88. Upon
completion of the entire two-year program, Initial Certificate
holders will have met the Illinois State Board of Education
professional growth requirements to be eligible to move to a
Standard Certificate after finishing four years of teaching.
This research-based design was
constructed in the best interest of the new teacher and focuses
on developing highly qualified teachers who are outstanding
educators.
Teachers new to the
district will be invited to attend two one-half day workshops.
Topics covered will include the culture of District 88,
preparations for the first day of school, district network systems, classroom
management/discipline, and initial meetings with mentors.
Teachers new to the district will also attend a full-day New
Teacher Institute planned and run by building and district
administration. The Illinois Professional Teaching Standards,
the State Content Area Standards, and building and district
goals are reviewed and discussed as well. These areas are also
reviewed throughout the two-year mentoring/induction process.
Mentors are expected
to meet with new teachers up to 20 hours per semester and to
have ongoing and continuous interaction with their protégés.
They are expected to take part in mentoring activities and to
remain current on the best practice in their field. They are
also expected to share these best practices and help identify
those things that work best in the classroom with their protégé.
Time outside of the classroom and school day is also expected to
be utilized for the benefit of the protégé.
