AR55015 Introduction to 2-D Art
Students will learn the basic elements of art and the
principles of two dimensional design and composition. Students will explore
drawing, painting, and printmaking. This course is a prerequisite for all
beginning and advanced drawing, painting, and graphic design classes.

AR55025 Introduction to 3-D Art
This is a general introductory art course which deals
with the principles of three dimensional design and composition. Students will
learn how to build, carve, and assemble sculptures out of media such as clay,
wood, metal, and found objects. Basic jewelry-making and body adornment will be
explored. This course is a prerequisite for all beginning and advanced
ceramics, sculpture and jewelry classes.

AR55035 Drawing 1
This is a course that explores both traditional and innovative drawing techniques and materials. Students will explore the fundamentals of sketching and drawing. A variety of media including pencil, pen and ink, pastels, colored pencils and charcoal will be used.

AR55095 Drawing 2
Prerequisite: Introduction to 2-D Art or Drawing 1
This course will provide students with the opportunity
to expand their drawing skills and a portfolio. A variety of drawing media such
as charcoal, colored pencil, graphite and pastel will be utilized as well as
expanding more advanced drawing techniques. Students will learn how artists of
the past as well as the present use drawing as a form of personal communication
as well as communication in the career world.. Observation from still life and
nature, photographic reference and imaginative drawing techniques are covered.
Human anatomy is emphasized.

AR55105 Painting 1
Prerequisite: Introduction to 2-D Art
This is a class that will provide the student with the basics of painting and color. Oil, acrylic, and watercolor, are the basic painting techniques that will be explored. Students will see how artists of the past and present use painting as a form of personal expression and communication.

AR55265 Painting 2
Prerequisite: Painting 1
This is a class that will continue to explore the world
of painting and color. Students will become more skilled in the painting
technique of their choice. Students will learn more advanced styles in color
theory and technique, and painting as a form of visual communication. This
advanced class engages the painter on many levels employing previously learned
techniques in combination with each other, working on unusual surfaces, and
creating unique painting formats.

AR55045 Clay 1
Prerequisite: Intro to 3D. Prerequisite waived for seniors.
This is a course in which students learn various methods of
working with clay. Assignments include hand building, throwing on the potter’s
wheel and glazing techniques. Emphasis is placed on quality, creativity and
craftsmanship. Significant ceramics of the past and present are also studied.

AR55085 Clay 2
Prerequisite: Clay 1 or Intro to 3-D Art
In this advanced course in ceramics, emphasis is placed on quality, creativity and good craftsmanship. Each student will be taught the procedures of loading and firing an electric kiln. Important pieces of ceramics from the past and present will be studied. Recommended for the serious student who wants to continue in this medium. Wheel throwing, sculpting and hand building will be the methods used to create functional and decorative art forms.

AR55135 Clay 3
Prerequisite: Clay 2
Clay 3 is a one-semester course offering students who have taken Clay 2 continued opportunities to work on the potters wheel, hand build or sculpt with clay. Advanced decoration techniques will be utilized, and students will learn how to mix and create glazes. Students will learn about the history of pottery, and possible careers in the field of ceramics.

AR55115 Animation and Cartoon Drawing I
Students will be introduced to basic drawing techniques in the fields of cartooning and animation. Projects will include a character model sheet, a drawn animation transferred to computer, a sound unit, and single-panel cartoons. Animations from past and present will be studied. This course is a dual credit course and receives college credit from College of DuPage.

AR55225 Animation and Cartoon Drawing II
Prerequisite: Animation and Cartoon Drawing I
This advanced course is designed to further the students' understanding of animation and cartooning. Students will study various styles of animation (clay animation, drawn 16 mm film animation, editorial cartoons) while continuing to develop their cartoon drawing skills and develop their own personal style. Students will focus on creating an in-depth original animation. This course is a dual credit course and receives college credit from College of DuPage.

AR44253 AP StudioArt
Prerequisite: At least three previous art classes (a minimum of B average), and portfolio review: or consent of the department chair.
The Advanced Placement Studio courses include AP Drawing, AP 2-D Design, and AP 3-D Design. These classes are intended for serious art students who wish to develop individual skills, style, and technique; along with a portfolio of work. Students will work on self-directed as well as teacher-directed assignments and will learn how to shoot professional quality slides of their work. Students enrolling in these classes are expected to take the Advanced Placement Art Exam for their AP Studio selection, which could result in receiving college credit and/or advanced placement in college. This exam costs $75. It is suggested that any open slots in the student's schedule be filled with advanced art courses to assist with the completion of the portfolio.

AR55055 Mixed Media Photography
This is a course for students who want to visually express themselves through the combination of photography, collage and various other art media. Students will learn basic photocomposition, black and white darkroom techniques. Throughout the semester, students will be compiling their artwork as pages of a “personal journal” book.

Computer Art 1 is a one-semester class that introduces students to the creative potential of using the computer to create art. Through hands on learning using graphics software, students will learn the fundamentals of good design and visual communication. The students will also explore the many career opportunities in the visual communications fields.

Prerequisite: Computer Art 1
Computer Art 2 is a one-semester class that will focus on advanced computer graphic techniques. Advanced assignments in Photoshop and Illustrator will be explored. Students will also further their knowledge of creating animations using Flash. This course will explore the many avenues computer art can take in any field of study.

AR55145 Web Site Design 1
Prerequisite: Keyboarding 1, Desktop Publishing, or pass proficiency test.
This class is designed to expose students to the fundamentals of web page creation and web site design. Students will learn how to create the basic elements that make up a web page. They will learn the principles of good design that make a web page/site attractive and eye-catching. With the use of powerful graphics software such as Microsoft Front Page and Adobe Photoshop, students will learn how to assemble test and images on pages and link them together to create a web site.

Prerequisite: Web Site Design 1
This class is designed to each advanced web site creation. Students will explore animated and interactive web content using Macromedia Flash, a high-end production software package used on many professional web sites. Students will build upon their knowledge of good design to create web content that is both highly functional and visually attractive.

AR55345 World Crafts
Students will create their own artwork based on multicultural crafts and art forms from various cultures including African, Latin American, Asian, Middle Eastern, North American, and European. Masks, handmade paper, mosaics, pottery, beading, and weavings are just a few examples of what the students of this class will work with. Students will also learn how the customs, social issues, values, religion, and geography are reflected and expressed through the folk art of that country.

AR55125 Graphic Design 1
Prerequisite: Intro to 2D
This course explores the use of computer-generated art;
it is an introduction to the computer as an artistic tool. A variety of programs
will be used to alter and manipulate images and typography in order to create
strong designs and compositions. Students will be taught page layout, image
manipulation, proper use of typography and logo design.

AR55205 Graphic Design 2
Prerequisite: Intro to 2D, Graphic Design 1
This class continues to develop artistic and technical
skills needed to solve complex design problems using computer software programs.
Projects include an advertising campaign for a company, package design, magazine
layout, invitations, photo essays, and visual collage book art.

AR55305 Jewelry/Sculpture
Prerequisite: Intro to 3D
This course is designed to give students the opportunity to explore both 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional jewelry and sculpture design in copper, bronze, and silver. Students will have an opportunity to work with a wide variety of materials including clay, glass, plaster, wood, and metal. Students will learn to use both additive and subtractive processes, and will be introduced to mold making. The work of contemporary artists will be studied.

AR55235 Advanced Animation
Prerequisite: A "B" average in Animation 1 / Animation 2 or instructor's permission.
Students who are interested in going into the growing field of animation need to have a block of studio time to produce animations to be used for scholarship opportunities and admission into art schools. Advanced Animation allows students to have time to work on an in-depth semester long project. In addition to working in a more independent manner, students will learn new software that allows them to add special effects and sound layers to their animations. (Past student films created during this class have been featured in The Ottawa Animation Festival in Canada and Chicago Youth Film Festival).

AR55243 Filmmaking
Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment with the English Department New Humanities
class
This course offers practical experience in actual film
production. Topics covered include writing scripts, directing, framing and
lighting concepts, basic editing, and use of sound.
