RD11023 Reading 9

Freshmen reading two or more years below grade level are assigned to this reading intervention for an entire year. Placement is based on junior high achievement scores, standardized tests, achievement of state standards, and teacher recommendation. This intervention works with the content area curriculum - building comprehension and enriching vocabulary by using a variety of instructional strategies, methods, and materials designed to appeal to each student's individualized learning style incorporated into the content area curriculum.
Semesters: 2

RD21043 Reading 10

Sophomores reading two or more years below grade level are assigned to Reading 10 for an entire year. Placement is based on standardized test scores, achievement of state standards, and teacher recommendation. Sophomores continue to build comprehension skills and increase vocabulary using the format stated under Reading 9. Emphasis is placed on study skills and "learning to learn," with increased reading of materials that deal primarily with inferential and critical thinking. In addition, technical reading required for the workplace is addressed. Students enrolled in Reading 10 are eligible to receive tutoring in all content area classes at no cost to them. Students may be assigned to additional reading courses if they do not meet the required exit criteria of reading at the designated NCE range on standardized tests and successful completion of content area courses.

RD31053 Reading 11

Juniors reading two or more years below grade level are assigned to Reading 11 for an entire year. Placement is based on standardized test scores, achievement of state standards, and teacher recommendation. Juniors continue to build comprehension skills and increase vocabulary using the format stated under Reading 10. Emphasis is placed on study skills and "learning to learn," with increased reading of materials that deal primarily with inferential and critical thinking. In addition, technical reading required for college and workplace continue to be addressed. Special consideration is placed on reading for content areas. Students enrolled in Reading 11 are eligible to receive tutoring in all content area classes at no cost to them. Students may be assigned to additional reading courses if they do not meet the required exit criteria of reading at the designated NCE range on standardized tests and successful completion of content area courses.

RD41063 Reading 12

Seniors reading two or more years below grade level are assigned to Reading 12 for an entire year. Placement is based on standardized test scores, achievement on the PSAE assessment, and teacher recommendation. Seniors continue to build comprehension skills and increase vocabulary that will be necessary to achieve maximum effectiveness in the workplace or as a consumer. In addition, they continue to work with inferential and critical thinking strategies. Students enrolled in Reading 12 are eligible to receive tutoring in all content area classes at no cost to them.

RD52015 Advanced Reading Strategies

Students reading within two years of grade level are enrolled in a one semester reading course. This course is designed to develop students' reading efficiency to its highest potential and prepare them to effectively handle the reading and study demands made upon them when they enter college and/or the highly technological world of work. In addition to strengthening study and comprehension skills and enriching vocabulary, special emphasis is placed upon critical and analytical thinking skills, problem solving, researching skills, test taking strategies in the content areas, reading efficiency and speed, college entrance examination preparation and pleasure reading.

RD15073 Reading ESL I

This one-period course is designed for intensive reading instruction in English for students whose basic language skills and cognitive academic language proficiency make it almost impossible for them to succeed in classes where the language of instruction is English. The course emphasis is on acquiring the comprehension and vocabulary skills necessary to become proficient readers, writers and speakers of the English language. Students enrolled in this course are concurrently registered in English as a Second Language I. Students enrolled in Reading ESL I are eligible to receive tutoring in all content area classes at no cost to them.

Exit criteria is based on standardized test scores, achievement of state standards, and teacher recommendation.

RD25083 Reading ESL II

This one-period course provides continued intensive reading instruction in English for students whose basic interpersonal language has developed to a level that allows them to begin reading independently in English, but whose cognitive academic language proficiency makes it difficult for them to succeed in classes where the language of instruction is English. The course emphasis is on acquiring the comprehension and vocabulary skills necessary to become proficient readers, writers and speakers of the English language. Students enrolled in this course are concurrently registered in English as a Second Language II. Students enrolled in Reading ESL II are eligible to receive tutoring in all content area classes at no cost to them.

Exit criteria are based on standardized test scores, achievement of state standards, and teacher recommendation.

RD35093 Reading ESL III

This one-period course continues to develop reading skills in English for students whose basic interpersonal language has reached the level of native speakers, but whose cognitive academic language proficiency still places them at a disadvantage in classes where the language of instruction is English. The course emphasis is on acquiring the comprehension and vocabulary skills necessary to become proficient readers, writers and speakers of the English language. Students enrolled in this course are concurrently registered in English as a Second Language III. Students enrolled in Reading ESL III are eligible to receive tutoring in all content area classes at not cost to them.

Exit criteria are based on standardized test scores, achievement of state standards, and teacher recommendation.

RD55105 Title I Tutoring (Semester 1)

Students enrolled in a corrective reading class are entitled to receive tutoring in all content area classes at no cost to them.

RD55125 Title I Tutoring (Semester 2)

Students enrolled in a corrective reading class are entitled to receive tutoring in all content area classes at no cost to them.
