Make sure to make a note the
name of the person or persons you interviewed (try to do this for both
sides of the family, both the mother’s
and father’s
sides) and their relationship to you:
-Who were the first people in your family to
come to America?
- How old were they when
they left?
- From what country did
they come?
- Why did they leave?
- When did they arrive
in America?
- What was their journey
like?
- What was their port of
entry?
- What kind of work did
they do initially?
- Did they find it hard
adapting to their new home? Did they experience any kind of
prejudice? Explain.
If the person you interview is an immigrant, ask these additional
questions.
- When you packed, what
were the two most important items that you took with you?
- What do you remember
most about leaving your homeland?
- What excited you most
about coming to America?
- What were your first
impressions of America?
- What one thing would
you like Americans to know about your homeland?
- How have your
expectations of America measured up to your experiences?
