Why and what are the benefits of the S.E.E.D. Program?

The 21st Century Vision for DuPage District 88
What is S.E.E.D?
SEED is a staff development opportunity that concentrates on examining our perceptions of our students and the role those perceptions play in our interactions with our students. Seminar topics include gender, race, class, culture and many other diversities of experience. Participants can expect to be involved in a variety of activities during the seminar meetings including discussions of reading, videos, exercises, journaling, and guest speakers. The main objective of the SEED seminars is to culminate a renewal of your overall focus of education and student learning in its relation to culture.

Why should I participate in the training?
As our demographics change, educators of all racial and cultural groups need to develop new competencies and pedagogies to successfully engage our changing student populations. SEED training involves the need to look within us to find the answers to important questions about our students in District 88. The answers impact not only our day-to-day lives, but also the culture and success of the overall school environment. Teaching can be an isolating profession - by the nature of this process, you will become connected with other staff members.

What it is not...
This is not an add-on curriculum to the already rigorous standards. It is not show-and tell OR make-it/take-it seminar. It is not a prescriptive diversity/ multicultural program revolving around the concept of blame. This is not a seminar of content that will shortly become a dust-filled relic on the shelf behind your desk.
