Overview:  Students recall information related to the topic of study in order to encourage incorporation of new information into prior knowledge.  The process also provides a common base of knowledge for all students.

Steps:

1.    Teacher provides a cue concept related to the new topic of study.

2.    Students respond in writing first then orally, listing everything that comes to their minds regarding the cue.

3.    Teacher transfers ideas to blackboard or overhead.

4.    Teacher directs discussion using student responses.

Recommendation:  Best results occur when students are asked to write out responses to cues first and then share orally.  This also enables the teacher  to assess both prior knowledge and misinformation held by each student.  When asking for list, teacher should encourage a response from EACH student.  Student may give new item to add or mention “best” item from his/her list.
