Addison
Trail Student Information Center - The Library

The assignment:
"Think of an idea for world change, and put it into action."
Mr. St. Clair from the book "Pay it Forward" page 43
Addison Trail High School
began this school-year with their second "One Book" initiative.
Aligning with Addison Reads, Mayor Hartwig's focus on a reading community, the ATHS One Book Team selected Pay
It Forward, by Catherine Ryan Hyde.
Each staff member received a copy of the book, compliment of Principal, Dr. Scott Helton. Staff
members are passing their copy of the book onto a student, on or before
October 19th, whom they will mentor. Teachers are encouraged to
personalize their copy of the book before giving it to the student they
select. The personalized notes reflect personal thoughts, reading
strategies, and vocabulary that will be helpful to the student. When
author Catherine Ryan Hyde visits Addison Trail HS on November 11 and
12, teachers and students will have an opportunity to share that
experience as they attend her presentation.

First One Book
Pay it
Forward
The book is fiction, but many actions inspired by the story
are real. Educators are encouraged to get involved. The concept has become an international organized
effort to help others.
The author,
The book and the movie are
very different! Students will be asked to compare and contrast
both and learn that seeing the movie is never enough!

Pay it Forward @
ATHS
It all started with a discussion
lead by Ed Buck in the
school library with school and community leaders in 2000.
The enthusiasm for the Snowball Retreat, a long weekend focusing
on positive decision making was waning and the leaders were
searching for new venue to bring 8th grade students to meet with
high school students. A team of student leaders who were
part of the retreats gave new life to the program calling it
"Pay It Forward." Since that time approx 300
students attend annually and is foundational for students
actions and programs paying it forward to others. The
action has spawned the concept of many third party beneficiary
programs. Several of the most recent programs, under the
direction of Ms. Yonke are:
Go Pink or Go Home - raise
awareness of breast cancer. Over one hundred AT students
raised money for the cause.
Key Club - Over 50 students participate in community service during the
school year. Some of their projects include Pads Shelter,
Kiwanis Peanut Day, the Crop Walk and more.
INTERACT
(LADIES & CIMA) - Actions include PADS shelter, and other
events that focus on community needs.
AT students from many groups responded to the recent need to help families
sandbag during the area flooding.
During Homecoming Week students
increased school spirit by actions in multiple various events. |
