PATTERN PUZZLES
One
active approach for understanding patterns and structure is to have
students move sentences around to form well-organized paragraphs and
essays. Pattern puzzles also work with any content that requires
sequencing of steps and/or ideas.
Cut
paragraph ** apart—sentence-by-sentence or section by section. Put all strips into an envelope.
Give the envelope to two or three students. Instruct them to work together to organize the sentences into
a well-written paragraph. Have
students explain why they organized the sentences (sections) the way they
did—what they noticed, what they did, why they did it.
**Use
pattern puzzles to explore a variety of structures. Use paragraphs where main ideas are implied; use poetry, math
word problems, scientific journal abstracts, and newspaper articles.
