Pre Reading Strategy
L.I.N.K.

Overview:  LINK is an acronym for List, Inquire, Note, and Know.  This strategy is aimed at helping students develop a link between existing prior knowledge and information they will be reading.

Steps:

  1. On an overhead, write a key word for a brainstorming activity.

  2. Have students list on a sheet of paper all the associations they can for the word (2-3 minutes).  After 2-3 mins. have students draw a line under their list.

  3. Elicit responses and write a master list on the board.  Students are to add to their original list.  Inquire as to why they made the association.

  4. Turn off the overhead.  Have students turn over their paper and write down everything that now comes to mind in response to the same cue word. (allow 1-2 minutes.)  This second list should demonstrate to students that they have many shared thoughts, and it will increase awareness of their prior knowledge.

Example key words:  stress, detour, voice, chain reaction, etc.
