Pre / During / Post Reading Strategy
CUBING

Overview:  This strategy requires higher order thinking skills from students.   Cubing can be used as brainstorming, connecting to text, and/or review.

Steps:

  1. Select content-related cues and one or more of the following starters to
to provide direction for the student writing:  describe it, compare it,
associate it, analyze it, apply it, argue for or against it.

  2. llow students 2 – 4 minutes to write on each topic.

  3. Ask students to share their responses.

Recommendations:  This strategy can be altered to fit teacher’s needs.  Starters may be substituted for terms, vocabulary, units, etc.  The cube is a handy prop but is not necessary for the success of the strategy.
