WORD SORTS Pre / During / Post Reading Strategy
Word
sorts can be done individually, in pairs, or in small groups. The
end
product of word sorts should be groups or categories of vocabulary
words
and/or technical terms from the text or concept clustered by a
common feature. Teachers may
consider using phrases and/or sentences
from the text instead of just words.
Limit the number of words, phrases,
sentences to 10-15. The words
can be prepared on 3X5 cards or from
cut up pieces of paper. The
same can be applied to phrases/sentences.
OPEN
sorts
– students must provide the categories themselves and justify their
classification system.
CLOSED sorts – students are provided
with the categories or criteria for classification.

& Kita, 1979)
