During Reading Strategy
TWO-COLUMN NOTES  (Cornell Notes)

Column Notes

Opinion Proof

Problem Solution

Thesis Proof

Overview:  Two-column notes can take a variety of forms depending upon the subject matter, instructional goals, and nature of the text.  The different forms may include

  • main idea-detail notes,

  • opinion-proof,

  • hypothesis-proof,

  • problem-solution, and

  • process notes.

Steps:

         1.  You pick a selection for the students to read.

2.    On the board or overhead, provide the main ideas in the left column.

3.    As you read the selection aloud, stop and fill in the right hand column with details with the students.

4.    You may provide the students with paper that has the main points listed, or students can record the main points from an overhead.

This strategy may be used during a reading, lecture, movie, or presentation.  The resulting notes can be used as a learning tool and/or a study tool.
