INSERT (SMART)
Self-Monitoring Approach to Reading and Thinking
Overview:
learning begins with an identification of what one understands and
what one does not understand from reading.
The student identifies confusing parts as well as important
sections through the use of post-it notes or folded piece of paper.
Use with DIALOGUE writing with students.
Steps:
1.
As the student reads, he/she uses post-it notes to mark places that
are confusing.
Student places a “??” and page # on the note.
2.
The
student uses “!” and page # when he/she comes across an important
idea.
3.
Have
students examine parts that they marked “??”
a.

b.

problem:
word? phrase? relationship?
c.
Decide
how to solve the “??”:
glossary, pictures, diagrams, or review previous section?
d.
try
to explain to himself/herself.
4.
Discuss
as a class any remaining “??” that students couldn’t solve.
