Pre Reading Strategy
PICTURE THIS !
End
result of this activity: a
creative writing assignment and activation of the student’s prior
knowledge.
Steps:
1.
Find a magazine or newspaper picture/photo or other visual
stimulus, which is related to the unit of study (concept).
An interesting, unusual, or complex photo may yield better results.
2.
Have students look at the photo carefully, and individually list 5
“things” they see in the photo. Each
student will have a unique list.
3.
Have students write a fictional account of the “event”
portrayed in the photo, attempting to incorporate the 5 “things” they
listed into the paragraph.
4.
Share stories with the class.
5.
Connect concepts, ideas, themes, etc. to the reading assignment.
Examples of
photographs: automobile
crash, a losing political candidate in an empty room scattered with
balloons, an empty dinner table after a meal has been eaten,
a polluted water way, a war scene.
