Post Reading Strategy
THE FRAYER MODEL

Overview:  The teacher selects an important concept in a lesson that can be analyzed and clarified by giving examples and non-examples.  It can be used as a word categorization activity (vocabulary).

Steps:

1.    Select concept or vocabulary

2.    Divide students into cooperative groups (or keep as whole group)

3.    Give each group the graphic design for the FRAYER MODEL with appropriate pairs of elements written into the opposite corners.   For example:  relevant and irrelevant attributes;  essential and nonessential characteristics;  examples and non examples

4.    Have student groups transfer answers to an overhead and team leader explain to other class members how answers were derived

Essential  characteristics                      Nonessential characteristics

 Examples                                          Non examples
