CINQUAINS

Overview:  A cinquain is a 5-line poem.  This method of contemplation helps the student evaluate the information learned and offers an alternative way of assessing the gained knowledge other than an objective form.  Writing cinquains requires thought.  The deeper the contemplation, the more permanent the image.

Steps:

1. 1.  Tell the students that they are going to create a poem that will reflect their new knowledge.  I suggest that you model on a generic topic before you apply a cinquain to your content area.
2.    Write the specific directions on the board

1st line  = one word title, usually a noun

2nd line =  two-word description of the topic (adjectives)

3rd line =  three wordings expressing action of the topic, usually ending in “ing”

4th line =  four word phrase describing the topic

5th line =  one word synonym that restates the essence of the topic.

3.  Students should be prepared to explain their word choices.

4.
Cinquains will be diamond-shaped if completed correctly
