Some 20 years after the end of World War I, lingering disputes erupted in an even larger and bloodier conflict—World War II. The war began in Europe in 1939, but by its end in 1945 it had involved nearly every part of the world.

Frontline:  A Jew Among the Germans
For years, Marian Marzynski lived with a fear of the people who had invaded his country and wiped out his family.  When the German government announced it was planning a memorial on the Holocaust, he decided that it was time to visit “the land of the enemy” and to find out – how does a new generation of Germans live with the crimes of the past? Watch the program online, view tapes/transcript. (Frontline/PBS)

The Political Dr. Seuss (PBS)

Most people know Dr. Seuss as the man behind "The Cat in the Hat". But how many know that "Yertle the Turtle" was modeled after Hitler - or that Dr. Seuss created WWII political cartoons that denounced racism, isolationism, and other issues of the day? THE POLITICAL DR. SEUSS reveals how popular children's author Theodore Geisel advocated social change, teaching generations of children not only how to be better readers, but better people as well.

War Ships Associated with WW II in the Pacific
This web site is a published theme study prepared for the U.S. Congress and the National Park System Advisory Board. It was written to evaluate surviving World War II warships that saw action in the Pacific against Japan to see if they would qualify for designation as National Historic Landmarks. Twenty-five of the warships were found to be likely to meet the criteria. The web site has a side bar with the various classifications of warships. You can click on them to read about the specific warships and also see pictures of them.

World War II Military Situation Maps

(Library of Congress American Memory)

The “World War II Military Situation Maps” contains maps showing troop positions beginning on June 6, 1944 to July 26, 1945.  Starting with the D-Day Invasion, the maps give daily details on the military campaigns in Western Europe, showing the progress of the Allied Forces as they push towards Germany. Some of the sheets are accompanied by a declassified "G-3 Report" giving detailed information on troop positions for the period 3 Mar. 1945-26 July 1945. These maps and reports were used by the commanders of the United States forces in their evaluation of the campaigns and for planning future strategies.

The collection consists of 416 printed maps and 115 reports, the originals of which reside in the Library of Congress' Geography and Map Division.
