Principles of Medical Ethics
From the AMA, nine principles of medical ethics are listed.
"Principles adopted by the American Medical Association are not
laws, but standards of conduct which define the essentials of
honorable behavior for the physician. "Among the principles
featured are those that ask that physicians be proactive in
monitoring their own profession, continuing their education, and
contributing to the betterment of the community. Other links are
available at this site including the history of the principles
of medical ethics, legal issues, and medical science.
WMA Medical Ethics
"Since its official launch in January, the WMA Medical Ethics
Manual has been distributed to medical journals and medical
schools throughout the world." This site presents recent
articles on the manual and the complete manual in PDF form. Each
chapter begins with a listing of the objectives the reader
should accomplish.
Tough Choices
The introduction to this site poses three scenarios of
medical/ethical dilemmas. "This Web site gives you the chance
both to inform yourself on some of the most challenging areas of
research underway in Nebraska and also to share your opinions on
these issues." Features include discussions on gene therapy,
stem cells, xenotransplants, and cloning.
Catholic Educators Medical Ethics Resource Center
This is a good repository of articles dealing with the Catholic
viewpoint and medical ethics.
What is Bioethics?
There are different kinds of ethics, and therefore there are
different kinds of medical ethics -- each with its own unique
ethical principles, subject matter, method (epistemology), and
squadrons of 'experts.'" After this clarification, the article
discusses many topics: Early History of 'Medical Ethics';
Ancient History; Modern History; From World War II to the
National Commission; and eight other major topics.
Trent Center for Bioethics
"The Center creates an interdisciplinary forum where physicians
and scholars can examine important questions at the intersection
of medicine, ethics, and the humanities." From this homepage,
the viewer can access the topics: people, education, activities,
calendar, publications, and links. A great feature is a link to
"Do No Harm," a radio magazine on medical ethics. The programs
are an hour long and may be listed to with Windows Media Player.
One of the programs is "Genetics: To Test or Not to Test."
Campaign for Responsible Transplants
"CRT believes that xenotransplantation poses a grave danger to
human health because of the risk of transferring deadly animal
viruses to the human population. Xenotransplantation would
burden our society with numerous health, environmental,
economic, ethical, and legal problems, and would cause
tremendous human and nonhuman suffering."

Organization of

policy statements on ethics,
philosophy, medical
education, aboriginals, and international health and developing
countries. Includes online journal, articles, and press
releases.
Siblings Provide Cure?
The current debate involves children who are terminally ill with
diseases such as leukemia or anemia. Recent technological
advancements allow doctors to transplant tissues from matching
donors into the sick child and possible cure the disease, thus
saving the child.
