Library Etiquette

PURPOSE     GENERAL THOUGHTS     PERSONAL ITEMS    SHELVING     CELL PHONES     REQUESTS

Etiquette is the code of unwritten expectations (which evolve into written rules) that governs social behavior. It usually reflects a theory of conduct that society or tradition has invested heavily in. Like "culture", it is a word that has gradually grown plural, especially in a multi-ethnic society with many clashing expectations. Thus, it is now possible to refer to "an etiquette" or "a culture", realizing that these may not be universal.

Etiquette fundamentally concerns the ways in which people interact with each other, and show their respect for other people by conforming to the norms of society.

PURPOSE  The Library Media Center is established to serve the learning community in supporting and fostering teaching, learning, and research activities. Everyone  can help make our Library a quiet and welcoming place conducive to reading, studying, and research activities. Be thoughtful of others and be sure:

  • To respect others using the library by minimizing noise and conversation.

  • To respect the books.  Many older books can no longer be replaced.  It is expensive or impossible to replace books already in the collection.

  • To use the bookmarks provided.  Marking, highlighting and folding pages can ruin a book.  Bookmarks help to prolong the life of the books.

  • To remember that food and drink can damage books and equipment.  Please refrain from eating and drinking in the library.

  • To respect the sign-out policies so others are not inconvenienced.

  • To return books to the library on time or when recalled by the library staff.

GENERAL THOUGHTS

  • Have fun. The library is a great place to explore.
  • Ask questions. Questions are our specialty. If you need help, PLEASE ASK!!
  • Be considerate. Remember there are others using the library as well.
  • Groups are welcome. As long as you follow the rules, groups of any size are welcome in the library.
  • The student cafe area is equipped with a pay telephone, vending machines, and an air-conditioned dining area. Please use that area for eating, socializing and telephone calls.
  • Reasonable quiet is maintained in all areas of the library for the benefit of students. Inappropriate or unruly conduct will not be tolerated. Those responsible will be asked to leave.

PERSONAL BELONGINGS:  Although the Library Media Center makes every effort to ensure a safe environment for everyone, it is still important for you to be cautious. Please do not bring valuable items into the Center. You should always guard your personal belongings such as wallets, purses, and mobile phones. NEVER leave them unattended. In case of theft, please report to the library staff.

SHELVING ETIQUETTE
Please do not reshelf books or journals.  Place them upright on carts or leave them on tables.  The Library gathers usage statistics during the reshelf process.  If you must leave before you are finished using library materials, leave a note saying "Please do not reshelf until (add date/period)."

CELLPHONES AND PAGERS
Electronic communications devices such as cellular phones and pagers are permitted in the LMC after school hours.  However, they must be used in a way that avoids disturbing other library users.  Electronic devices should be turned to silent or vibrate mode.  Any conversation on a cell phone should be held in a private area other than in the library.
